The combination of an acute international financial meltdown and rising oil volatility has renewed debate over energy security. With the U.S. currently importing almost 70% of its crude oil, national security is once again impacting the energy debate. Given its role as the world’s largest oil consumer, U.S. problems are no longer simply domestic. Does the global oil sector have enough supply to offset price, availability and political instability? One conclusion seems certain. As the worldwide recession recedes and oil demand returns, these two security concerns will converge into one significant issue.
