Sportradar AG: European Football's Corner-Kick Revolution: Goals Surge as Set Pieces Shape Title Races

New Sportradar research finds corner conversion across Europe's Big Five leagues reached a ten-year high in 2025/26

ST. GALLEN, Switzerland and LONDON, Aug. 24, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Corner kicks are becoming one of football's most potent attacking weapons, with new Sportradar research revealing a sharp rise in conversion rates across Europe's biggest leagues, showing how set pieces helped shape the outcome of the 2025/26 season.

Analysis of ten seasons of data across the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, LaLiga, Premier League and Serie A found that historically, teams scored from approximately one in every 28 corners they took. During the 2025/26 campaign, that increased to approximately one in 23 - representing an increase in conversion efficiency of around 22%.

Sportradar's new research paper, Turning the Corner into Goals, examines which leagues, clubs and players are gaining the greatest advantage from corners, from the growing effectiveness of inswinging deliveries to attacking and defensive efficiency and the impact of corner goals on league positions.

Among the standout findings across Europe's Big Five leagues:

  • Premier League clubs led Europe for corner conversion, scoring approximately once every 18 corners, while Arsenal ranked first across all 96 clubs analysed for overall corner efficiency.
  • The Bundesliga ranked second for corner conversion, with almost 5% resulting in goals, while four German clubs - Freiburg, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Union Berlin - ranked among Europe's eight most efficient attacking teams.
  • LaLiga produced three of Europe's five strongest corner defences, led by Real Madrid, who conceded just twice from 138 opposition corners - the best defensive performance of all 96 clubs analysed.
  • Paris FC was Ligue 1's most efficient attacking corner team, converting 6.04% of its opportunities, while RC Lens ranked first in France and ninth across Europe for overall corner efficiency.
  • Inter led Serie A for attacking corner efficiency, scoring 19 goals from 242 corners for a conversion rate of 7.85%, while Como recorded the league's strongest defensive performance.
  • Casemiro and Virgil van Dijk were the top scorers from corner situations across Europe's Big Five leagues, with six goals each.
  • Freiburg's Jan-Niklas Beste (17.4%) was the most efficient corner taker across Europe's Big Five leagues, followed by Tottenham Hotspur's Mathys Tel (15.6%).

The tactical arms race heading into 2026/27

The question for the new season is whether attacking teams can push their advantage even further.

A growing number of leading clubs have invested in specialist set-piece expertise, while teams are using increasingly sophisticated analysis to identify weaknesses in opposition corner structures and develop their own attacking and defensive routines. As successful approaches become more visible, the tactical battle continues to evolve, with attacking innovations prompting defensive responses and vice versa.

Changes to the Laws of the Game add another dimension. From 2026/27, certain time-wasting offences can result in corners being awarded, potentially increasing the frequency of a set piece that teams are already converting more effectively than at any point in the past decade.

With increasingly sophisticated data, specialist coaching and tactical preparation being applied to every corner, Sportradar's analysis suggests European football is entering a new set-piece arms race, one capable of influencing title races, European qualification and relegation battles during the season ahead.

Achtung, Korrektur!
