WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - American Airlines (AAL) is stepping up its focus on premium travellers with the launch of its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER, one of the airline's largest aircraft and a key part of its long-haul international network.
The updated aircraft has 144 premium seats, including 70 lie-flat Flagship Suite seats with sliding doors at the front of the plane. American is replacing traditional international first class on many aircraft with a larger premium cabin as it looks to attract more high-spending travellers.
The aircraft also includes 44 Premium Economy seats with added comfort features and 30 Main Cabin Extra seats with additional legroom. The remaining 186 seats are in the standard Main Cabin.
American plans to retrofit all 20 of its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft by next year. The airline will also introduce a similar, smaller premium layout on its Airbus A321XLR aircraft.
The move is part of American's effort to compete more closely with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, which have invested heavily in premium cabins and services. American is also working to strengthen its loyalty programme, improve punctuality and expand its international network.
