To educate teens on traffic safety, the AAA Foundation
for Traffic Safety and AAA Auto Club South recently teamed up with
Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) to provide a free copy of the AAA
Foundation's interactive and engaging risk management software,
Driver-ZED(TM) to every Boys & Girls Club in the United States.
"Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for teen drivers," said Tom O'Brien, president, AAA Auto Club South. "Working with Boys & Girls Clubs of America is a natural venue through which we can educate teens and raise awareness about their safety behind the wheel."
To address teen skill deficiencies, the AAA Foundation created Driver-ZED(TM), the basis of which is real-world, live-action video containing four levels of interactivity in three driving environments (town, country, highway).
"Novice drivers are less effective in scanning, recognizing potential driving risks, and making tough decisions quickly compared to more experienced drivers," said Peter Kissinger, president and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. "ZED is basically a computer game that teens can use to gain invaluable, vital driving experience in a low-risk environment behind a computer."
"We are very grateful to be teaming up with AAA," said Glenn Permuy, senior vice president, services to Clubs, BGCA. "By providing a fun and interactive way to capture teens' attention, Driver-ZED(TM) stands to positively impact our education and outreach with respect to teen safety."
Boys & Girls Clubs of America (www.bgca.org) comprises a national network of some 3,700 neighborhood-based facilities annually serving more than 4.4 million young people, primarily from disadvantaged circumstances. Known as "The Positive Place for Kids," the Clubs provide guidance-oriented character development programs on a daily basis for children 6-18 years old, conducted by a full-time professional staff. Key Boys & Girls Club programs emphasize character and leadership development, education and career enhancement, health and life skills, the arts and sports, fitness and recreation.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety is an independent, publicly funded, 501 (c)(3) charitable research and educational organization established in 1947 by the American Automobile Association. The AAA Foundation's mission is to prevent traffic deaths and injuries by conducting research into their causes and by educating the public about strategies to prevent crashes and reduce the impact when they do occur. Individual copies of Driver-ZED(TM) and more information are available at www.driverzed.org.
AAA Auto Club South is the third largest affiliate of the AAA federation with over 3.8 million Members in Florida, Georgia, the western two-thirds of Tennessee, and Puerto Rico.
