BERLIN (AFX) - Schering AG and Siemens AG said they will jointly evaluate the potential of Siemens' new Dual Source Computer Tomography (CT) in combination with Schering's CT imaging agent Ultravist.
Siemens presented the new system, named SOMATOM, at the 91st congress of the Radiological Society of North America. It is the world's first Dual Source CT system, in that it employs two X-ray sources and two detectors at the same time, as opposed to one source and one detector.
Schering board member Erich Reinhardt said the new technology can be used in new areas of research, and that physicians can use it to diagnose disease earlier and more cost-effectively.
The two companies have started testing the system in patient examinations at the University of Erlangen in Germany.
