CUPERTINO (dpa-AFX) - Apple Inc. (AAPL) has reportedly laid off at least 60 employees working on its Vision Pro and other virtual reality projects, signalling a further slowdown in the company's mixed-reality ambitions. According to AppleInsider, the cuts affected employees within the Apple Vision Group and related VR positions.
The move follows reports that Apple has scaled back its plans for future Vision Pro products after the headset struggled to gain broad consumer interest. The company has reportedly cancelled plans for a second-generation Vision Pro and a cheaper, lighter 'Vision Air' model, while development of a more affordable headset display was also suspended.
Apple is instead placing greater emphasis on smart glasses and artificial intelligence, including Siri. The Vision Pro product line is not believed to be cancelled entirely, with Apple continuing development of visionOS and future headset technology, but the reduced workforce suggests the company is reassessing its strategy for spatial computing.
