WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - W. R. Berkley Corporation (WRB) on Monday reported third-quarter net income attributable to common stockholders of $446.0 million, or $1.14 per share, down from $511.0 million, or $1.28 per share, in the prior-year quarter.
Operating income for the quarter was $456.5 million, up from $440.2 million a year earlier, while operating income per share increased 6.4% to $1.17 from $1.10.
Total revenue decreased to $3.74 billion from $3.77 billion, while gross premiums written rose to $3.95 billion from $3.84 billion.
Net investment income increased 9.2% to $383.5 million, supported by 12.0% growth in the core portfolio.
Pre-tax underwriting income for the Insurance segment grew 10.6% to $237.7 million. The reported combined ratio improved to 90.8% from 90.9%.
