WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Insurance giant American International Group, Inc. (AIG) on Tuesday reported an increase in profit for the third quarter, supported by improved investment results, higher General Insurance net investment income, increased earned premiums and strong accident-year underwriting performance.
Net income attributable to AIG common shareholders increased to $844 million, or $1.60 per share, from $519 million, or $0.93 per share, in the year-ago quarter.
Adjusted after-tax income declined to $1.09 billion, or $2.06 per share, from $1.23 billion, or $2.20 per share.
Total net investment income rose to $1.10 billion from $772 million, primarily due to changes in investment fair values and higher income from available-for-sale fixed-maturity securities. On an adjusted pre-tax income basis, net investment income increased to $1.08 billion from $1.02 billion.
General Insurance net premiums written increased 7 percent to $6.65 billion, or 8 percent on a constant-dollar basis. Underwriting income, however, declined to $564 million from $793 million, while the combined ratio increased to 91.3 percent from 86.8 percent, reflecting higher catastrophe losses and lower favorable prior-year reserve development.
The board declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.50 per common share, payable December 30, 2026, to shareholders of record as of December 16, 2026.
