"Satellite Swap-Out" Promo Invites Red Hat Network Satellite Users to Switch to rPath for Better Way to Manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- rPath adds automated inventory discovery, UI enhancements and incremental patch selection to its Linux patching and update capabilities
- Provides IT a better, more intelligent way to automate and manage change today and tomorrow
- RHN Satellite users can visit http://www.rpath.com/swap-out to take advantage of the "Satellite Swap-Out" promotion
rPath, an innovator in automating system provisioning and maintenance, today announced enhancements to the intelligent patching capabilities of its next-generation system automation platform. Specifically, rPath now automates inventory discovery, allows users to "cherry pick" updates and errata for incremental updates, and simplifies the user experience for Linux patching and system administration. To encourage Red Hat Network (RHN) Satellite users to try the rPath platform, the company has launched its "Satellite Swap-Out" promotional offer. For existing RHN Satellite customers, rPath will match or beat their current subscription to RHN Satellite with a richer, more complete solution.
More information on the "Satellite Swap-Out" promotion is available at http://www.rpath.com/swap-out.
"For enterprise IT today, change is the only constant, and it can be costly, time consuming and risky to implement," said Jake Sorofman, chief marketing officer for rPath. "rPath provides IT a better, more intelligent, more scalable way to automate and manage system change today and into the future. Going forward, most enterprises will see compounding scale and new requirements for managing their entire system stack in a coordinated way, across physical, virtual and cloud environments. And that's something that only rPath can do."
From Intelligent Patching to Intelligent System Automation
For enterprises running Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other Linux distributions, rPath's support for automated inventory discovery and incremental updates makes the patching and updating process faster, safer and more predictable than traditional approaches. Users can surgically update systems, applying automatically-generated incremental updates to only the components that require change. rPath creates a complete system manifest that acts as a blueprint for seamless, automated change. The manifest provides deep understanding of what software is deployed, which patches and updates apply, and what the impact of changes will be.
Beyond its intelligent patching enhancements, the rPath system automation platform offers a range of features that extend far beyond the functionality of RHN Satellite. While RHN Satellite is focused on managing the OS layer, rPath is designed to manage complete, self-contained systems stacks—from the application through the operating system—and coordinate the management of all the layers in that stack.
For Satellite customers, rPath offers several key advantages:
- System version control – the industry's only commercial version control platform for deployed software systems. This operational management platform applies the principles and disciplines of source code control to the management of deployable software systems—specifically, system manifests, packages, binaries, policies and configurations. System version control ensures systems can be quickly reproduced, patched and updated, rolled back and reported on.
- Deep system modeling– the industry's first deeply modeled system inventory. This inventory granularly describes the desired state of every file, binary, application component, and software stack on every production system—with complete information about applied policies and dependencies—as version-controlled system manifests. These manifests are actionable models for managing the complete lifecycle of deployed systems, providing an unprecedented degree of transparency for understanding change impact and controlling change.
- Hierarchical system definition – a method for improving standardization, reuse, and management efficiency by letting IT define systems as layered variants of common base platforms. For example, the standard corporate web server stack may start with a standard build of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but add a specific custom version of the Apache web server and remove all availability of FTP. Hierarchical platform definition lets IT administrators avoid massively redundant and error-prone patching and application updates across deployed instances by applying changes once at the top of the hierarchy.
- Automated dependency discovery – the process of deeply analyzing each software artifact to discover its entire software supply chain, including OS components, middleware and libraries. The discovered information enables build-time system construction and validation, and reduces the number of deployment failures and maintenance outages that result from missing or conflicting dependencies. The discovery process is triggered whenever rPath imports new or existing software artifacts into its system version control repository.
- Release lifecycle management – rich release management tools for simple, access- and version-controlled handoffs across development, test and production phases of system provisioning and update processes. This eliminates the risk of configuration drift, ensures clean "separation of duties" and allows updates to be prepared and tested in isolation and deployed with dramatically reduced risk of failure.
In addition to the features above, rPath has committed to an aggressive product roadmap for its system automation platform. Code-named Project Javelin, this roadmap will yield the industry's first next-generation, version-controlled data center automation solution. Under Project Javelin, rPath will offer complete automation and control over creation, deployment and maintenance of IT systems—business service, application and enabling software, and configuration data—managed together under strong version control. In turn, enterprises will gain a foundation for policy-driven IT and complete automation and control at every level of the IT system for dramatically reduced system administration costs.
