Collaboration includes 10th anniversary magazine issue, commemorative book, dedicated web site, and HBO documentary that will also air on CNN.
TIME is leading a collaboration of Time Warner outlets with the special package Beyond 9/11: Portraits of Resilience marking the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and their aftermath.
Anchored by a special issue of TIME, Beyond 9/11 features untold stories, captured in words and images, from 40 women and men who led America, moved the nation, and sacrificed for it, in the hours, days and months that followed Sept. 11, 2001.
Working with the editors of TIME, award-winning photographer Marco Grob produced an astonishing set of portraits which are coupled with dramatic oral histories from people including George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rusmfeld, Rudolph Giuliani, Adm. William McRaven (who led the mission that killed Osama bin Laden) and, for the very first time, the only four survivors of the attack on Tower Two of the World Trade Center who were above the point of impact.
Beyond 9/11 includes the following elements:
- From TIME, a special issue of the magazine to hit newsstands Friday Sept. 9, as well as a 112-book from the editors of TIME, to be released on September 13; a special TIME.com web site showcasing all of the portraits and oral histories, and a related iPad edition.
- From HBO, in association with TIME, a 60-minute documentary that will premiere on the network and HBO GO at 8.46 a.m. EST on 9/11.
- CNN will air a version of the Beyond 9/11 documentary at 11 p.m. on Sept. 9, following three consecutive nights of exclusive CNN documentaries related to the anniversary that will air at that hour.
- A multi-media exhibit of Marco Grob's photographs and interviews for TIME will be installed at New York's Milk Gallery, with an opening event on Sept. 8 hosted by Time Warner and featuring a panel discussion led by TIME managing editor Richard Stengel and featuring a prominent newsmaker. The exhibit will open to the public at Milk Gallery, in Chelsea, on Sept. 17.
- TIME and Marco Grob will donate the collection to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
Richard Stengel, TIME's Managing Editor, said: "TIME has created an extraordinarily powerful and arresting collection of photographs and video oral histories of the survivors and heroes of 9/11, as well as people whose lives changed dramatically in the days and years that followed. We are proud to bring this important content to readers and TIME.com users, who consistently turn to us for our unparalleled access and analysis of significant events and milestones. And we are delighted that it will find an even wider audience on other platforms and mediums around Time Warner."
Jeff Bewkes, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Time Warner, said: "Many of our employees and friends were affected by the events and aftermath of 9/11, and it is our privilege and obligation to participate in this historic anniversary by doing what we do best." Mr. Bewkes continued: "This exceptional project embodies the journalistic excellence that TIME magazine stands for, and, importantly, Time Warner's unique ability to tell and showcase the world's most compelling stories across our portfolio of platforms and brands."
