Toshiba Expands Its Use of SRS Technology for Latest Qosmio(R) Notebook Computers

SANTA ANA, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SRS Labs, Inc. , a leading provider of innovative audio, voice and semiconductor technology solutions, today announced that Toshiba continues to expand its use of SRS technology with the launch of two new models in Toshiba's Qosmio line of AV notebook computers. The F15-AV201 and G15-AV501 models deliver a cinema-quality listening experience through the use of SRS WOW XT(TM) stereo enhancement and TruSurround XT(R) ("TS XT") virtual surround sound technologies. These two models are also the industry's first computer products to incorporate system-level audio drivers for SRS technologies which allows any audio source on the PC to be enhanced with the SRS patented techniques when played through the computer's speakers, external speakers or over headphones. These new Qosmio products broaden the existing relationship between Toshiba and SRS Labs from plasma televisions, LCD TVs and Satellite notebooks to this new line of cutting-edge multimedia notebook computers.

"As we designed this new Qosmio multimedia PC, the primary driver was to deliver an unprecedented visual and audio experience," said Taro Hiyama, vice president of marketing for Toshiba's Digital Products Division, a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. "For that, we needed to form a strategic partnership with a recognized leader in audio technology that could not only deliver the best available audio enhancement and virtual surround sound technologies, but that had a long standing brand name and reputation as being the audio experts."

Users can access the SRS features through Toshiba's Virtual Sound interface, allowing them to customize their audio settings to their personal preferences for any audio source including audio from games, DVDs, downloaded music files, CDs or even in the TV tuner mode. With this feature these new AV notebook PCs are transformed into a virtual home theater complete with SRS Labs' WOW XT 3D audio enhancement, SRS TruBass(R) bass enhancement, SRS TruSurround XT surround sound virtualizer and SRS Dialog Clarity(TM) for crisper, cleaner dialog intelligibility. When mono or stereo audio is played, WOW XT delivers powerful 3D audio enhancement and when multichannel audio is present, such as a DVD movie, TruSurround XT provides powerful and immersive virtual surround sound.

"Toshiba's expansion of our technologies is an important testament to the value of the SRS brand and the growing need for our solutions to help OEMs like Toshiba exceed the consumer's audio expectations in these new multimedia PCs," said Joanna Skrdlant, director of strategic IC platform development for SRS Labs. "We are pleased to have Toshiba as our first licensee to implement our new integrated system-level audio solutions on the innovative Qosmio models. It is clear that Toshiba has very high standards and is dedicated to delivering only the best audio and multimedia experience possible to their customers for these notebooks."

These models mark the first implementation of SRS Labs' new system-level drivers for the PC market, which are audio drivers that reside deep in the PC's operating system and automatically enhance all audio that runs through the computer. Instead of being integrated with just one or two specific applications, this new solution can enhance all sources such as DVD movies, games, CDs, music, and even streaming media from the Internet. The solution has playback modes for headphones, internal laptop speakers or even external speakers. Previously, each application had to engage the SRS technology to enhance the audio output making special programming changes per application that licensed the SRS technologies. Now, these system-level solutions require very little work for PC makers to integrate into the system while providing audio enhancement to the entire computer, not just one or two individual applications. In addition, using system-level solutions such as these provide ODMs and OEMs a very cost effective and fast-to-market solution that is flexible and tunable to make each notebook or PC sound the best it possibly can.

SRS WOW XT and TruSurround XT are ideal solutions for the multimedia PC environment, combining to create a true home theater experience over a computer. Two powerful audio techniques are included in TruSurround XT that further increase the home theater-like experience. SRS Dialog Clarity improves dialog intelligibility during passages of movies where soundtracks have been mixed for cinema sound systems and loaded with the latest special audio effects. This patented SRS algorithm enhances signal clarity, thus dramatically improving dialog intelligibility. SRS TruBass, a patented bass enhancement technology, delivers deep, rich bass over small speakers and headphones for improved low frequency performance up to an octave below the limitations of the speaker drivers.
