Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission Approves Agreement to Allow Duquesne Broadband Wireless Internet Pilot in Monroeville |
|
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) approved a contract between Duquesne Light Company and Duquesne Broadband to permit the initiation of an Internet pilot program across the utility's distribution wires for 2,000 households in Monroeville. This select group of Duquesne Light customers will be among the first in the nation to experience high-speed wireless Internet service delivered through broadband over power line (BPL) technology by Duquesne Broadband. PUC approval enables Duquesne Broadband, a joint venture between BPL Global and DQE Communications Network Services, a subsidiary of Duquesne Light Holdings, to expand its BPL offer throughout the Duquesne Light service area in the coming months. Earlier this year, the company introduced the service to a small test group of customers in Monroeville. "It's been great," said Steve Reese, a Monroeville teacher and test user of the broadband service. "I teach a transportation engineering class, and have used Duquesne Broadband for research that brings insight to the class. My wife uses it as well, and loves it. I was especially pleased with the speed, considering that I have a computer at the low end of the scale for use with the service." "The set up was easy," said Bob Barry, also a test user of the broadband service. "Turn the laptop on, and you're connected. I use wireless at the office, and now, with Duquesne Broadband, I use it at home as well." At a stable monthly price, comparable to other introductory Internet offers, pilot customers can receive a full line of services, including unlimited Internet access, multiple email accounts, spam blocking, anti-virus protection and parental controls, all via a secure, personal connection. "Test customers were impressed with Duquesne Broadband's wireless Internet service and flexibility during this summer's testing," said Mark Rupnik, vice president of DQE Communications. "Now even more customers can experience our innovative wireless Internet service for a consistent and reliable price." Customers within the pilot area can begin subscribing to the service beginning Dec 26. Though service is limited to the targeted area within Monroeville, Duquesne Light customers can register their interest for Duquesne Broadband at http://www.duquesnebroadband.com/ . Broadband over power lines, which works by sending a broadband signal through power lines, is an innovative technology of global interest. Cities in North and South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East are launching programs to evaluate and deploy this new technology.
