L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its
Link Simulation and Training (Link) division has been awarded an
initial $51.9 million contract from the Naval Air Systems Command to
build six F/A-18C/D Tactical Operational Flight Trainers (TOFTs) under
the U.S. Navy's new F/A-18C/D Roadmap Procurement Program (RPP)
initiative.
Under the five-year F/A-18C/D RPP, Link has options to build a total of 11 new TOFTs and two F/A-18 Deployable Readiness Trainers, as well as to modify 16 currently fielded F/A-18C/D TOFTs. The contract's value could grow over this period to approximately $93.4 million.
"Link Simulation and Training is very pleased to be able to continue to provide the U.S. Navy with advanced simulation solutions that will support Hornet pilot training that is highly realistic, interoperable, and offers a full spectrum combat training environment," said David Love, vice president of Business Development for Link. "As part of this program, we are establishing a software action team that will quickly insert new training device capabilities, keeping the training system concurrent with the latest modifications made to the aircraft."
Of the six TOFTs currently on order, four will replicate the F/A-18C, and two will simulate the F/A-18D. Under the initial task order, all simulators, which will be integrated with Link's SimuView(TM) personal computer image generation system and nine-facet, 360 degree field-of-view SimuSphere(TM) visual display, are planned for delivery during the second quarter of 2008.
These initial deliveries will include F/A-18C TOFTs, installed at: Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, VA; NAS Lemoore, CA; NAS Beaufort, SC; and Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, TX. NAS Beaufort will also receive two F/A-18D TOFTs.
Link expects to receive future contract option orders during the five-year program that will call for four additional F/A-18C TOFTs and one F/A-18D TOFT. It is anticipated that Link also will receive a contract option order to deliver an F/A-18C Deployable Readiness Trainer to Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan and an F/A-18C/D Deployable Readiness Trainer to NAS Iwakuni, Japan. Modification of the 16 currently fielded F/A-18C/D TOFTs is slated to begin in 2008 and conclude in 2009.
