Con-way LTL Carriers, Employees Honored for Safety Accomplishments

ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Con-way Freight, a subsidiary of Con-way Inc. , announced today that it was honored by two state trucking associations for exemplary safety performance, while two of the company's driver sales representatives were recognized for individual excellence and career-long safety achievements.

At its 50th annual safety awards ceremony, the Kansas Motor Carriers Association awarded Con-way Freight-Central (CWC) the Great West Safety Award for outstanding achievement in highway safety. The company was honored in the General Commodity Common Carrier Division, representing trucking companies that run between 5,000,001 - 10,000,000 miles delivering freight during the year.

It was the second consecutive year Con-way Freight-Central won the award. It recognized the work of Con-way's more than 241 drivers in Kansas who demonstrate superior safe driving practices while providing exemplary customer service to Kansas' commercial and industrial businesses.

The Association also announced that it had named Ernie Arnote, a Con-way Freight-Central driver sales representative based in Kansas City, to the organization's Road Team for the 2006-2008 term. The Road Team serves as a safety advocacy and education group, using professional truck drivers as ambassadors to deliver the industry's message of safety and economic contribution to a wide variety of constituents, including civic and service organizations, high schools, business associations, the general public and news media.

Arnote has been a professional truck driver for 14 years, 12 of those with Con-way. He has driven 1.5 million miles accident free and has received numerous awards and honors for safety. Domiciled at the company's Kansas City service center, he works as a line-haul driver making nightly runs between Kansas City and other Con-way centers in the Midwest. He will spend several days a month representing the Association and promoting highway safety and defensive driving at educational events throughout the state.

In Ohio, Con-way Freight-Central driver sales representative Bruce Early was honored as Driver of the Month by the Ohio Trucking Association. Early, a 37-year veteran of the trucking industry has worked for Con-way for 22 years. Early was one of 12 drivers honored at the annual safety awards event. Early has driven over three million miles in his career without an accident. A former national truck driving champion, he won top honors in the 3-Axle Class at the 1999 competition. He also placed first in the Straight Truck Class in the 2004 Ohio driving competition. He is based out of the company's Cleveland service center.

In New York, the New York State Motor Truck Association awarded CWC a Great Western Safety award for first place in the Large Class Division.

"Safety is one of the core values of our enterprise, and these awards, particularly the individual performances of our employees, are a validation of our commitment to safe driving and safe freight operations," said David S. McClimon, president of Con-way Freight. "I want to add my congratulations to Ernie and Bruce for their accomplishments. These awards are well deserved and are an example of the professionalism and dedication to safety all Con-way employees bring to work every day."
