Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c47953) has announced the addition of China Sourcing Report: Flash Memory Cards & Readers to their offering.

Based on in-factory tours

Greater China's export of flash memory card and readers totalled US$1.4 billion in 2006, a year-on-year growth of almost 60%. This momentum is expected to continue as more makers expand their production capacities to serve emerging markets.

Global shipments of flash memory cards are skyrocketing, driven primarily by a decline in component costs and the proliferation of new applications for mobile phones and digital cameras. Mirroring this trend, shipments of flash memory card readers have also been gaining momentum. Due to the low technology threshold of card reader production, many existing computer accessory makers have been jumping onto the bandwagon.

The supplier base in Greater China comprises about 35 flash memory card makers and more than 100 card reader makers. There are 15 flash memory card makers and 50 card reader makers in Taiwan as well as 10 card makers and 50 card reader makers in mainland China. Hong Kong has less than 10 card makers, but its supplier base of card readers is growing.

Makers in Greater China produce a wide range of flash memory cards, including MultiMediaCards (MMCs), CompactFlash (CF), Secure Digital (SDP), Memory Stick (MS), SmartMedia (SM), MicroDrive, xD cards and their variants.

This report covers 22 suppliers from mainland China, eight from Taiwan and six from Hong Kong. Fourteen of these suppliers produce both flash memory cards and card readers, while the rest produce either cards or card readers.

Based on the manufacturing, product development and export statistics provided by the 36 featured suppliers, the author presents the following findings:

  • Mainland China's projected 2006 shipments of flash memory cards and card readers are higher than 2005 shipments by 50 percent and 20 percent, respectively.
  • The bulk of Greater China's flash memory card and card reader exports go to OEM customers, and there is a growing number of own-brand cards and card readers.
  • Developed markets in North America and Western Europe absorb most of the makers' exports. Flash memory card and card reader makers are also turning to emerging markets in Southeast Asia and East Asia for their entry-level and midrange products.
  • First- and second-tier suppliers have in-house chip-on-board (COB) lines and SMT lines. Having these lines in in-house provide suppliers better control over quality assurance and production timings compared to suppliers that outsource.
  • To minimize the effects of supply and price fluctuations of memory chips and controller ICs, makers develop and sustain relationships with major component suppliers.
  • In 2007, makers will focus their R&D on increasing storage capacity, lowering power consumption and enhancing data transfer rate.
  • Notwithstanding high levels of available capacity among makers of flash memory cards and card readers, additional SMT lines and work space top the expansion plans as suppliers foresee significant growth in demand.

To create this report, the author's research teams toured the factories of 22 makers and discussed with top-level executives about manufacturing, sales and export plans. The report has an in-depth profile of each of these makers, as well as detailed profile tables of another 14 suppliers.
