BACKGROUND: | World's largest solar boat program launches in November when teams of high school students assemble identical single-seat hulls from kits of marine-grade plywood. For the next six months they equip boats with solar-collection panels, motors, batteries, steering and electrical systems. May 16 will be qualifying events; May 17 will be endurance races; May 18 will be sprint races and awards program. | |

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a cooperative of 26 cities and water agencies serving 18 million people in six counties. The district imports water from the Colorado River and Northern California to supplement local supplies, and helps its members to develop increased water conservation, recycling, storage and other resource-management programs.
