Now that the Internet is having to handle more and more video streams, the ongoing popularity of social networking, growing use of the mobile Internet and prospects associated with the Internet of things… a great many questions are being asked about the Web's economics.
This year's DigiWorld Summit will provide an opportunity to discuss the following points:
- What new communication practices are taking hold in the various
forms of online consumption?
How do they correlate with the new leaders' strategies? What shifts in value are they creating in the main sectors that are directly involved (telecom, TV, software, print media, publishing, video games, etc.)? - Is the Internet threatened by the upsurge in traffic?
What impact are users' new behaviour patterns and the major content aggregators' practices having? Who is investing in what? Which players are best prepared for cloud architecture?
- What role does the Web play in public policies?
Regulation, security, financing access infrastructure, spectrum, R&D, major applications projects, etc.
After having honoured Japan, South Korea, India, China and the United States, IDATE's Summit will focus this year on the Internet's role in Europe's forward-looking strategies, and Europe's role in the Internet of the future.
The plenary sessions, keynote talks and the workshops will be devoted to exploring the following:
- How is Internet infrastructure withstanding the rise in traffic? Who is investing in ways to handle this increase, and how are roles currently assigned between players involved in transit and in peering practices? What is the outlook for the CDN market? Who are the major players in cloud architecture? What can we expect from NGN in terms of QoS, traffic management (packet prioritization, VPN…), interconnection and interoperability?
- Is it likely that we will see television and, more generally, all of the various forms of video viewing shift entirely to the Net? Under what conditions? And with what consequences? How are the major studios preparing for the explosion of the connected TV? Is there room for partnerships between telcos and the entertainment industry?
- What changes will the mobile Internet bring? What can we say about the coexistence of app stores and search on the Web? How are operators going to handle the risks of congestion? What is a realistic roadmap for 4G rollouts? What are the spectrum management options? What level of integration between fixed and mobile ultra high-speed infrastructure?
- Is the hierarchy of social networks settling in? Will they be the main platforms aggregating applications and services on the Web? What restrictions will users put on how these sites can exploit their personal data?
- At what pace will ultra broadband be deployed, and using which business model? How will it alter the Net? What role will public financing (public-private partnerships) play in ultra high-speed network rollouts and the Internet of the future? Are we moving towards a separation of infrastructure and services?
- How is the process of the Internet's value destruction-creation playing out in sectors like business software, print media and publishing, music, video games…? What are the most promising paths in priority investment areas such as healthcare (eHealth) and sustainable development (smart grid, smart cities…)?
- And, finally, which players are in the best position to have a major hand in shaping the Internet of the future? What business models are prevailing? What shifts might we see in geographical balances and the Internet economy's centre of gravity? What changes might we see in Internet governance? What are the new competition, privacy and security issues that regulators need to prepare for?
As in previous year, IDATE consultants will introduce the sessions and seminars with their analysis of markets and player strategies. These analyses will be expanded upon and discussed by some 100 top-flight speakers from around the globe (industry heads, public authorities and academics).
