Research and Markets(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/21ceaf/romania_retail_rep) has announced the addition of the "Romania Retail Report Q2 2010" report to their offering.
The Romania Retail Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, retail associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Romania's retail industry.
The Q210 BMI Romania Retail report forecasts that the country's total retail sales will rise by 67% by 2014, growing from US$41.64bn in 2009 to an estimated US$69.57bn by 2014. Continuing wage growth, the recent consumer lending boom and rising disposable income following the introduction of a new flat rate of income tax are key factors behind retail market expansion. Romania's privatisation process since 1990 and EU membership since in 2007 have allowed retailers to make significant inroads into the market, contributing to forecast annual retail sales growth of 6.8% in dollar terms.
Romania's nominal GDP was US$163.02bn in 2009, with 2009's -7.0% growth expected to ease to -0.1% in 2010 as the economy slowly starts to improve. Average annual GDP growth of 1.4% is forecast by BMI between 2009 and 2014, improving to an average 3.9% from 2011. Although the population is forecast to decrease slightly, from 21.4mn in 2009 to an estimated 21.3mn by 2014, GDP per capita is predicted to grow by 76.5% by 2014, reaching US$13,444. Our forecast for consumer spending per capita is for an increase from US$4,732 in 2009 to US$5,815 in 2014.
Wage growth in Romania, as in many other Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, has accelerated quickly over the past few years, more than doubling between 2002 and 2006 from US$1,932 to US$4,083. The European Commission forecast nominal and real 2008 wage growth in Romania to be the fastest among all 27 member states, and BMI estimates the 2009 average annual wage at US$5,224. Romania has the second largest population in Central Europe after Poland, with 39.2% of the total in 2005 in the 20-44 age range, according to UN Population Division data. This segment of the population, which accounts for a key element of future retail spending, is forecast to increase to 41.1% in 2010. The proportion of the population classified by the UN as economically active was 70.1% in 2005 and is predicted to reach 70.7% in 2010.
Non-food retail sub-sectors benefiting from changing patterns of consumption in Romania include clothing and footwear, which constituted 6.2% of total household monthly expenditure in 2006, up from 5.9% in 2001, according to the Institute of National Statistics (INS). Furniture accounted for 4%, up from 2.9% in 2001.
BMI estimates that food and drink had a 53.6% share of the total retail market in 2009, which is forecast to decrease to 34.5% by 2014 as the market matures and the non-food sector asserts itself. Over the counter (OTC) pharmaceutical sales, worth an estimated US$0.68bn (1.6% of total retail sales) in 2009, are expected to grow to US$1.09bn by 2014, maintaining their market share. Automotives sales are estimated at US$6.27bn for 2009 (15.1% of the total retail market) and are forecast to increase to US$13.35bn and 19.2% of total retail sales before the end of the forecast period.
Retail sales for the BMI universe of CEE countries in 2009 amounted to an estimated US$1,067bn, based on the varying national definitions. Total consumer spending for the region based on BMI's macroeconomic database amounts to US$2,135bn. Russia, Turkey and Poland together accounted for an estimated 82% of regional retail sales in 2009, with their combined share expected to exceed 87% by 2014. For Romania, the estimated 2009 market share of 3.9% is expected to fall to 3.4% by 2014.
