Pharmacy Professor is a Leader in Pharmaceutics and Clinical Pharmacology
The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) will honor a pharmacy educator from the University of Florida (UF) for his outstanding research and contributions to the field of pharmaceutical sciences. Hartmut C. Derendorf, Ph.D., will receive the prestigious Volwiler Research Achievement Award during the Examining Excellence Awards Plenary at the 2010 AACP Annual Meeting and Seminars in Seattle, Wash., July 10-14.
"Dr. Derendorf is an exceptional leader and teacher. He is not only known for his incredible contributions to pharmaceutical education, but for his leadership and mentorship to advance research that is vital to the academic community," explained Lucinda L. Maine, Ph.D., R.Ph., AACP executive vice president and CEO. "It is an honor to present him with this award."
Considered a pioneer in the field of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling, Derendorf's textbook, Handbook of Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic Modeling, published in 1995, was the first comprehensive summary of the state of the art in the field. He has published more than 340 scientific publications and given over 650 presentations at national or international meetings. He has published six textbooks in English and German and is editor or associate editor of four scientific journals.
"His work has yielded impressive results, as evidenced by the funding he has secured from the National Institutes of Health and other state/national agencies, as well as such international industry leaders as Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Boehringer Ingelheim, Sankyo and Pfizer," said Nicholas S. Bodor, Ph.D., D.Sc., executive director of the UF Center for Drug Discovery. "An outstanding publication record of more than 340 refereed publications, including six textbooks, is a testament to the sustained research efforts he has guided his group to achieve."
Derendorf joined the University of Florida in 1981 as the postdoctoral fellow of that year's Volwiler Award recipient Eugene C. Jorgensen. He is currently distinguished professor and chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutics at the UF College of Pharmacy. Described as an integral component in the college's teaching of biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics and clinical pharmacokinetics, Derendorf has received the UF Research Foundation Professorship, the CVS Pharmacy Endowed Professorship, the International Educator of the Year Award and the UF Doctoral Advisor/Mentoring Award.
"It is a great honor to be selected for this year's Volwiler Award and to join a highly distinguished group of previous award winners," said Derendorf. "The award represents the recognition of academic research in pharmacy as a core foundation of our profession. I believe that in my case, it acknowledges the significance of integrating basic and clinical science to streamline drug development and identify optimum dosing strategies for new medicines."
The award consists of a gold medal and a monetary prize, and was established in honor of the late Ernest H. Volwiler, Abbott Laboratories former president and research director.
The 2010 AACP Annual Meeting and Seminars, Expanding Our Horizons, will be held July 10-14 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel in Seattle, Wash. The conference offers educational programming, exhibits, networking events and award presentations. Registration fees are waived for credentialed journalists.
