Successful online auctions confirm repositioning
New York/Berlin/Paris, June 16, 2011 -- artnet AG, the international
transaction and information platform for the art market, today announced
the world record sale of Le Corbusier''s deluxe Unité portfolio (1953). This
record setting sale is a major landmark for artnet Auctions as it
represents the completion of the recent strategic repositioning of artnet
to focus on online art auctions and demonstrates that collectors are
recognizing the cost benefits of the global online art market. Artnet has
already established itself as the market leader in the online art auctions
segment, this is reflected in the continued strong growth; in 2010 the
auctions generated $2,584,373 in revenue a 140% increase compared to 2009
($1,333,229) and early indications suggest that growth will continue in
2011 with $839,818 revenue already generated in Q1 2011 which constitutes a
49% increase compared to Q1 2010 ($572,111).
Le Corbusier''s deluxe Unité portfolio (1953) achieved $57,500, a world
record price for this collection. It is very rare for complete sets to
appear at public auction and the pristine condition and storied provenance
attracted enormous international interest. According to Brent Lewis, head
of design auctions at artnet ''Unité was included in our inaugural design
auction, launched this May. We were thrilled to see such active interest
both from traditional art collectors as well as the design community, who
are excited to find a new venue to buy and sell design alongside paintings,
sculpture, prints and photographs.''
