- Efficiently Increase Market Share in Africa Market
Hong Kong, Aug 25, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Trony Solar Holdings Company Limited ("Trony" or "the Company", stock code: 2468.HK), China's largest manufacturer of thin film photovoltaic ("PV") modules, is pleased to announce that its East Africa office in Kenya has commenced operation aiming tointensify its regional solar off-grid applications development and raise the market share in those African countries where on-grid system is difficult to be developed as mainstream.
According to the latest annual report of the African solar development project "Lighting Africa " which was lead by International Finance Corporation (IFC), in Africa, there are still over 100 million families (involving up to over 500 million people) live without electric power. In 2010, the local family and SMEs' Lighting Applications scale is involving at least US$10 billion per year, and is estimated to reach over US$12 billion by 2015 with 80% contributed by off-grid users which indicates enormous potential off-grid market growth in Africa.
"Thin film solar panel can be well applied in Africa given its satisfying cost performance and stability under high-temperature conditions. Moreover, thin film solar cell can offer various choices with regard to product specifications to the huge market ofoff-grid lighting applications. And, its flexibility meets relevant product development needs, which makes it the best choice ofor off-grid applications in Africa. Africa has now occupied nearly 40% of Trony's terminal products application market after all these years' development, while the distribution of off-grid market in Africa is still scattered and the quality varies. We will provide high quality products to promote our company's image, and strengthen communication and cooperation with local distributors and NGOs to provide and modify off-grid applications plans, while enhancing cooperation with sell side, to promote Africa's off-grid application market development in the long run", said Mr. Li Yi, CEO of Trony Solar.
About Trony Solar
Trony Solar was listed on the Main Board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited on 7 October, 2010. Trony is one of the leading thin film photovoltaic module producers in the world. It commenced operations in 1993, became a manufacturer of thin film solar embedded modules in 1995 and began commercial production in 1998. Trony began manufacturing standard PV modules for solar home systems and other solar off-grid applications in 2006. Because of the high demand of off-grid system, in July 2009, Trony completed construction of 70 MW fully-automated manufacturing line, bringing its annual manufacturing capacity to 115 MW. Currently, Trony's annual manufacturing capacity is 205 MW, and a new manufacturing line with annual manufacturing capacity of 65MW is in trial production as scheduled which will expand the annual manufacturing capacity to 265 MW within 2011.
Trony was ranked number three globally as measured by thin film module production volume in 2010, according to a report commissioned by Trony and prepared by Photon Consulting, a solar energy research firm and consultancy.
According to a 2009 report commissioned by Trony and prepared by Frost & Sullivan, an independent research and consulting firm, Trony was the top off-grid PV product producer among all solar companies in China, which include thin film, single-crystalline and polycrystalline module producers, with 14.8% of the market share in terms of total shipments for 2009.
Meanwhile, Trony is one of the photovoltaic module producers with the lowest cost in the world. Trony uses semiconductor technology to deposit silicon-based thin film onto a substrate to manufacture PV modules that are significantly thinner than conventional crystalline silicon PV modules.
In the course of its research and development work on solar power, Trony has obtained more than 120 patents on solar power application technology. The Company was granted "China Outstanding Patent Award" by the State Intellectual Property Office in the "11th China Patent Awards" in 2009. Trony also participated in a number of state-funded research projects, including the National High-tech R&D Program 863.
In the area of BIPV, four members of our management team were selected to serve on China's national BIPV technical standard committee to make the overall developing plan for BIPV technology of China. In 2008, the PRC Ministry of Housing Construction for Urban and Rural Areas selected Trony as the preferred provider of BIPV products as part of their initiative to support the development of green energy.
To maintain its competitive advantages, Trony has been cooperating with many famous universities and institutions in mainland China and Hong Kong in research and development on solar power technology, including Jinan University, Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In particular, Trony started its cooperation in research and development with Shenzhen University in 2003. In 2010, Trony have also cooperated with the Tokyo Institute of Technology to develop high performance solar cells and next generation PV technology to support Trony's continuous development of off-grid applications.
