On Saturday, DCP Midstream (DCP) joined 15,000 others in walking to raise funds and awareness for the American Heart Association's (AHA) mission of reducing heart disease by 20% by 2030.
DCP is proud to have raised $612,000 for the Denver Heart Walk through employee giving and its inaugural charity golf tournament. Together with community teams and company teams of walkers, the Denver Heart Walk's overall $1.6 million goal was significantly surpassed, making Denver one of the top Heart Walks in the country.
"For DCP, our commitment to the American Heart Association is founded on a partnership of creating healthier workplaces," said Wouter van Kempen, DCP's president of gathering and processing. "We receive education and awareness from American Heart so we can be our most productive and healthiest. That's a great outcome for our employees."
More than 300 DCP employees walked together, joined by their families, friends and pets.
DCP joins Denver's leading companies in creating and supporting a heart healthy America. Cardiovascular disease is a killer that strikes more than a quarter of the U.S. population each year. One of the reasons DCP is a strong supporter of the Heart Walk and the AHA is because DCP employees participate in annual health assessments to identify potential health risks. Greater education and resources such as those provided by AHA are an important tool in reducing DCP's employees' health risks.
DCP, in its fourth year partnering with the AHA, provides leadership in addition to monetary support. Van Kempen, DCP's president of gathering and processing, serves on the executive leadership team for the Heart Walk. Irene Lofland, vice president of internal audit, serves on the executive committee for Go Red for Women, which focuses on women's heart health. Roz Elliott, vice president of public affairs, chairs the executive committee for employee workplace giving.
