INFRARED 800 and FLOW 800 Fluorescence Modules showcased at the upcoming EURAPS 2012
JENA/Germany, 25 May 2012
The INFRARED 800 and FLOW® 800 fluorescence modules from medical technology provider Carl Zeiss Meditec enable neurosurgeons to interpret the speed and direction of the blood flow precisely and quickly during surgery. This technology is also available for plastic & reconstructive surgery in the assessment of viable tissue useful in graft surgery. This technological advancement enables surgeons to evaluate tissue grafts perfusion before transplantation. Vascular occlusions become visible within a few seconds and can be immediately treated intraoperatively.
At the meeting of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS) taking place from May 24 to 28, 2012 in Munich, Germany, Carl Zeiss will present to the medical community this innovative fluorescence technology on its surgical microscope platform, OPMI PENTERO® 900.
Initial study results confirm the benefits for plastic and reconstructive surgery
Initial studies have confirmed the benefits of intraoperative fluorescence technology for plastic surgery, in particular for flap grafts.
"The integration of fluorescence technology into the surgical microscope offers the surgeon more safety and certainty in clinically ambiguous situations during the procedure. Blood flow anomalies can be quickly detected, and the required surgical interventions initiated immediately. The method can predict the complication-free healing of skin and tissue grafts and provide initial indications of thrombosis," says Prof. Dr. med. Riccardo Giunta of the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. Dr. Giunta and his colleagues worked with FLOW 800 on the publication titled "Intraoperative indocyanine green fluorescence diagnostics using a surgical microscope in plastic surgery" published in April 2012 in the journal Handchirurgie Microchirurgie Plastische Chirurgie (Holzbach T et al. 2012: Handchir Microchir Plast Chir 44, 84-88).
"We are pleased that we can now expand the fields of application for our fluorescence methods and therefore also assist doctors in plastic and reconstructive surgery in providing their patients with even better treatment," says Dr. Ludwin Monz, President and CEO of Carl Zeiss Meditec AG. "The results of the studies are very promising as they underscore the clinical benefit and innovation potential of the methods for use in different applications."
Fluorescence technology fully integrated into surgical microscope of Carl Zeiss
The fluorescence modules INFRARED 800 and FLOW 800 are completely integrated into the OPMI PENTERO surgical microscope platform enabling an optimal clinical workflow and outcome.
With INFRARED 800, all relevant information is displayed quickly and clearly on the integrated display during the surgery. The perfusion status can be immediately determined by visualizing the blood flow simply and on-demand.
FLOW 800 enables fast, clear presentation of the data. Selected areas can be analyzed even more exactly using curve diagrams, and blood flow anomalies quickly identified using comparative displays.
