Department of Defense Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems Focus on Missile Defense and Targeting, Finds Frost & Sullivan

-- Operational and spending priorities ensure continued improvement of surveillance and weapon systems capability

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, Oct. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Force structure reductions limits the table of equipment expansion. Every military department will be reduced, with ground forces seeing the most significant changes to force structure. The impact caused by all of this will be softened by the purchase of new platforms, along with upgrades and modernization of existing systems.

Frost & Sullivan's Aerospace & Defense (www.frost.defense.com) practice finds that Department of Defense (DoD) spending for electro-optical (EO)/infrared systems (IR) totaled $4.58 billion in 2012. These expenditures are estimated to reach $4.79 billion in 2017.

Continuing combat operations drives the demand for accurate and responsive sensors to provide surveillance and reconnaissance, as well as targeting data. Improved EO/IR sensors along with datalinks and distribution systems have shortened the time of the sensor to shooter kill chain.

"Both counter insurgency and counter terror warfare have also driven the widespread adoption of aircraft targeting pods, multi-spectral imaging, man-pack full-motion video displays and platforms equipped with multiple sensors," said Frost & Sullivan Senior Industry Analyst Brad Curran. "These tools enable military forces to react quickly and effectively to enemy activity in real time."

Once the domain of intelligence, special operations and dedicated targeting units; the more widespread use of current relatively inexpensive and responsive EO/IR system tasking and data are available to a much broader base of military units. The routine use of these EO/IR systems at all echelons enables effective surveillance and targeting.

Actual contract spending on targeting applications exceeded budgeted programs in 2011. Non-programmed contracted EO/IR services represented 19.2 percent of total spending during this year.
