DRS Technologies Announces Sale Of New Efficient Permanent Magnet Motors For Oil And Gas Drilling Industry

ARLINGTON, Va., March 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --DRS Technologies, a Finmeccanica Company, announced today the sale of its first PR Series 1600 HP permanent magnet motors. The sale was to oil and gas industry equipment and service provider Weatherford International Ltd. The PR Series 1600 HP motor is a rugged and efficient motor designed for use on oil drilling mud pumps. Use of the motor allows for a reduction in the size of the overall drilling system and decreased total operating costs for the drilling contractor and/or operator.

DRS's permanent magnet motors are built to perform under some of the most demanding conditions and proven by years of rugged oil and gas industry performance. The new 1600 HP motor is ideal for demanding jobs where small dimensions, efficient performance and precise control are essential.

Integrating the DRS PR Series motors in a direct drive configuration on Weatherford's EH-1600 Triplex Mud Pump results in a 25% reduction in volume and a 12% weight savings of the entire pump skid. The power-density of permanent magnet motor technology and the removal of the belts and sheaves associated with traditional motors contribute to the impressive reductions in volume and weight, enabling easier and less costly transportation of the pump skid. The higher efficiency of PM motor technology significantly reduces fuel consumption making the pump less costly to operate.

"The successful testing and fielding of this motor design is encouraging." said Rich Armstrong, Vice President and General Manager of DRS Power Technology, Inc. "We believe permanent magnet motor technology and the direct drive mud pump, working together, can provide significant value to drilling contractors and their customers."

The PR Series permanent magnet motors were developed at DRS Power Technology's facility in Massachusetts in partnership with Weatherford and will be mounted on Weatherford's EH-1600 Triplex Mud Pump.

DRS and Weatherford began working together in 2010 for a more efficient permanent magnet motor design. The companies worked in close cooperation with drilling contractors to perform the detailed mechanical and electrical design and integration for equipment that operates in demanding land and offshore drilling conditions.
