IMO Urges Providers to Continue Plans for ICD-10-CM/PCS Conversion

NORTHBROOK, Ill., April 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --With Senate passage of the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 (H.R. 4302), which includes a delay until October 2015 for required use of ICD-10-CM/PCS as the coding standard for Medicare reimbursement to healthcare providers, Intelligent Medical Objects, Inc. (IMO) urges its customers, vendor-partners and provider organizations to maintain their commitment to the transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM/PCS.

"ICD-9-CM is over forty years old and does not have the level of specificity necessary for adequate monitoring and evaluating healthcare services in this century. Clinically specific data is required to support current and future healthcare services. Our customers and partners have invested heavily with human and capital resources to make the conversion to ICD-10-CM/PCS, as well as prepare for attestations for Meaningful Use 2 and 3," said Frank Naeymi-Rad, PhD, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

He continued, "Many organizations that were behind in their transitions can breathe a sigh of relief, but now is not the time to lose momentum but to continue on course. Transitioning as planned allows organizations to leverage IMO ICD-10 specificity, collaborate with vendor-partners on innovative solutions needed to meet current and future healthcare challenges.IMO offers uniquely valuable and clinician-friendly solutions to ensure a smooth transition whenever it is required. We also offer more advanced terminology normalizations to prepare our partners and clients to meet the challenges for Accountable Care services as well as ICD-10."

Andrew Kanter, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer, added, "Our clinical interface terminology retains clinically-useful descriptions that map to the more granular IMO ICD-10-CM codes for vastly improved clinical documentation. Although there will be an impact on the clinical workflow when ICD-10-CM is required, IMO tools and terminology makes this conversion faster and much less painful."

"It is critical that health care organizations stick to their implementation plans despite this extension.Forward thinking providers who are already set for implementation can use this extension to further refine their processes with IMO such as leveraging IMO's assistance with Meaningful Use," said Bac Palomo, CFO and Executive Vice-President.

IMO is the developer of the most widely-used and physician-preferred terminology service for electronic health records (EHR) systems. IMO's interface terminology allows clinicians to build problem lists and capture true clinical intent that leverages their existing medical terms while preparing to meet meaningful use attestation criteria. IMO's terminology service contains over 460,000 clinician-friendly terms that are seamlessly mapped to reference coding systems including SNOMED®CT, ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, RxNORM®, CPT®, LOINC®, DSM-IV® and DSM-5®.
