Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) announced that its loop slurry technology will be marketed under the MarTECH trademark. MarTECH technology, available for licensing by Chevron Phillips Chemical, offers licensees state-of-the-art options for efficiently producing a high quality, broad portfolio of leading edge polyethylene products, with initial capital investment and economies of scale that are world class.
First commercialized in 1961, MarTECH loop slurry technology is exceptionally versatile and employs a variety of advanced catalysts, including metallocenes, to produce a broad resin slate for a full range of applications. Building on its single loop heritage MarTECH SL technology, Chevron Phillips Chemical recently introduced MarTECH ADL (advanced dual loop) technology, a proprietary dual loop process enabling production of bimodal PE resins for advanced applications including PE 100 pipe.
All MarTECH technology delivers reliable, high-reactor throughput while minimizing capital expense, operating costs and environmental impact. It is utilized by numerous commercial reactor facilities worldwide and in 2013, 21 percent of the worldwide high-density polyethylene (HDPE) capacity was attributed to MarTECH technology, totaling more than eight million metric tons of polyethylene per year.
"MarTECH technology leverages more than 50 years of polyethylene loop operation, development and experience," said Pawan Bassi, global director of licensing for Chevron Phillips Chemical. "It remains one of the most productive, profitable and widely licensed polyethylene production technologies in the industry."
In 1951, Paul Hogan and Bob Banks at Phillips Petroleum Company founded the catalytic polyolefin industry with the discovery and patenting of the Phillips chromium catalyst for polyethylene production. With more than 50 historic years of relentless innovation, the MarTECH process continues to be a technology leader in the plastics industry. Hogan and Banks were posthumously inducted into the Plastics Hall of Fame in April 2014 as a testament to their lifetime of discovery and the role the MarTECH process has played in the industry.
