Milton Security Group Becomes Sustaining Sponsor to the OpenSSL Software Foundation

FULLERTON, Calif., May 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Milton Security Group, a manufacturer of network security appliances and network management solutions, has pledged continuing financial support to the OpenSSL Project. The support, which will be given monthly for a minimum of 12 months, will go a long way in helping OpenSSL plan for a future.

"The OpenSSL project provides a necessary service to all Internet transactions and communications, and they do it for free," Jim McMurry, CEO of Milton Security Group, explains. "As a network security company that utilizes OpenSSL, we felt it was time for us to step up and contribute to its sustainability, and a one-time donation wasn't going to get it done."

Currently, the OpenSSL Software Foundation is a volunteer-based team. OpenSSL powers thousands of hardware appliance and software applications around the globe. Since OpenSSL is available for free, there is no direct revenue source to sustain a permanent staff, which makes it difficult for planning purposes, and resources. Knowing they have money coming in on a regular basis will ease that uncertainty a great deal.

"No donation is unappreciated, but this kind of sustained funding is something we can make long-term plans around," said Steve Marquess at the OpenSSL Software Foundation. "We know we have a big job to do and the support from Milton Security Group will help us get it done."

OpenSSL is the most popular cryptographic software around, and can be found in approximately two-thirds of all websites. The highly publicized "Heartbleed" bug was a vulnerability in the coding of OpenSSL that provided a way for hackers to steal data being sent over the internet. The vulnerability has since been corrected, but served to highlight how dramatic the need to support OpenSSL is.

Milton Security would like to voice its support and appreciation for the OpenSSL Project. They highly encourage any company that uses this wonderful toolkit, and is able to follow the example that Milton Security has set. Milton Security hopes that they are the first in a long line of sustaining Tech Company supporters. Please help OpenSSL stay strong and secure.
