"Talking Is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing" event will feature families, performers, storybook characters and local celebrities
Oakland, CA-On Thursday, July 24, local business and community leaders will join book authors and live storybook characters to share the new "Talking is Teaching: Talk Read Sing" campaign with hundreds of Oakland families at Children's Fairyland. The campaign was launched at an event today with Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as well as pediatricians, business leaders and local elected officials at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
"Talking is Teaching: Talk Read Sing" seeks to close the "word gap" by highlighting for parents how simple actions like describing objects seen during a bus ride, singing songs, reading aloud or telling stories can significantly improve babies' ability to build vocabulary and boost their brain development. The creative campaign, developed by the Bay Area Council in partnership with Goodby Silverstein & Partners, includes television commercials and radio spots, prompts like "Let's Talk About the Bus" on billboards and bus shelters around Oakland, as well as a new clothing line for babies and toddlers.
According to recent field research, fewer than half of parents and caregivers in Oakland report reading to their children every day, and even fewer report talking about their day and singing to their children. These activities have been shown to have a profound impact on the development of very young children, whose brains develop approximately 80 percent of their capacity by age three.
"Talking is Teaching: Talk Read Sing" is a joint effort of local business and community leaders including Bay Area Council, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland and Kaiser Permanente, as well as Too Small to Fail.
WHAT:Press will be invited to view the "Talking Is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing" campaign creative, including special installations throughout Fairyland. Hundreds of Oakland families will receive clothing and blankets for toddlers with campaign prompts, as well as books.
