Celebrating the Past at Manitoba's Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede / Member of Parliament Robert Sopuck announces support to Manitoba Agricultural Museum

AUSTIN, MANITOBA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/24/14 -- Department of Canadian Heritage

The Government of Canada is providing $15,600 to the Manitoba Agriculture Museum for the 60th edition of the Manitoba Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede. Funding is provided through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, which offers Canadians more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.

Robert Sopuck, Member of Parliament (Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette), announced the funding today while at the event. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

Quick Facts

-- The 60th Manitoba Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede is taking place
    from July 24 to 27 in a working Homesteader's Village. It includes
    musical performances and heritage demonstrations on horse plowing,
    blacksmithing, harvesting, stooking, and threshing.
-- The 2014 Reunion feature attraction is "Manitoba's Military Heritage."
    It commemorates the impact of the 100th anniversary of the First World
    War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War on Manitoba farms,
    families, and communities. Special commemoration activities include:
    -- Manitoba's largest ever display of pre-1960 operating vintage
        military vehicles;
    --  live presentations of "Life in the Trenches for a WWI Soldier";
    -- a fashion show of military uniforms and civilian dress from the war
        years;
    -- musical performances from the RCAF Air Command Band and the PPCLI
        Regimental Drum Line;
    -- an exhibit on military sites, people, and units stationed in
        Manitoba.
-- Approximately 600 volunteers get involved during the four-day festival.
    The expected attendance is 11,000.
-- The Manitoba Agricultural Museum, located on 320 acres near Austin, is
    dedicated to collecting vintage farm machinery and buildings from 1900
    and beyond.

Quotes

"As we prepare to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017, our Government is proud to support activities that commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War. This was an important chapter in our collective history, and I would like to applaud the Manitoba Agricultural Museum for creating an opportunity for Canadians to honour those who served, to reflect on what we have achieved as a country, and to promote a strong sense of pride among all Canadians."

-The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

"I am proud that our Government is investing in the Manitoba Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede. For 60 years, this event has allowed residents and visitors alike to better understand prairie life and how it has evolved over the past century. I am delighted to be part of today's event."

-Robert Sopuck, Member of Parliament (Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette)

"This year's edition of the Manitoba Threshermen's Reunion and Stampede is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Manitobans to connect with our province's military heritage. We thank the federal government for their contribution to the event and the Manitoba Agricultural Museum."
