Supporting the International Wheelchair Tennis Championships: International Tournament Receives Government of Canada funding

MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- (Marketwired) -- 09/18/14 -- Department of Canadian Heritage

The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced $15,000 in funding for Tennis Canada. This funding, provided through Sport Canada's Hosting Program, supports the hosting of the International Wheelchair Tennis Championships.

This event is being held from September 18 to 21 at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal.

Quick Facts

--  The funding announced today is part of a total of $150,000 that Sport
    Canada will contribute to Tennis Canada through the Hosting Program
    toward hosting four international tennis events in Canada this year.
--  Sport Canada will provide up to $875,500 to Tennis Canada in 2014-2015
    through the Sport Support Program.
--  Sport Canada provided $74,400 through the Athlete Assistance Program to
    6 wheelchair tennis athletes to assist with living, training, tuition
    and special needs expenses in 2013-2014.
--  Rules for wheelchair tennis are the same as for able-bodied tennis
    except that two bounces are permitted. Wheelchair tennis is open to
    athletes who have permanent or substantial loss of function in one or
    both legs.
--  Tennis Canada is the governing body for wheelchair tennis in Canada.
