Big Deal: T-Systems Migrates ThyssenKrupp to the Cloud

BONN, Germany, December 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

  • In the future, ThyssenKrupp will obtain 80,000 computer workstations and 10,000 server systems worldwide from the Telekom cloud
  • Telekom hosts all data in five data centers on four continents
  • One of the largest cloud contracts for Telekom subsidiary T-Systems

T-Systems wins one of the largest cloud orders in the Group's history. The Telekom subsidiary will migrate around 80,000 computer workstations and 10,000 of ThyssenKrupp AG's server systems in 34 countries to the cloud. The contract has a volume in the three-digit million euro range and a term of seven years.

"Our objective is to create an integrated IT landscape that makes global cooperation simpler and more efficient, but also fulfills the different IT needs of the Group divisions," says Klaus-Hardy Mühleck, Chief Information Officer at ThyssenKrupp AG. "With this major project, we are entering into a strategic partnership with T-Systems. We also build upon the expertise of T-Systems regarding the important topic of IT security." With the "unITe" IT consolidation program, ThyssenKrupp decided to harmonize and standardize its IT landscape in 2012.

"The more complex a company's IT world, the more it is necessary to migrate to the cloud: only this reduces costs, increases efficiency, and increases the flexibility of IT," says Deutsche Telekom AG Board of Management member Reinhard Clemens. "We want to be the first choice for companies' digitization needs. The contract with ThyssenKrupp shows that we are heading in the right direction."

Even before the year ends, T-Systems will begin moving IT processes and services from the current 700 data rooms and eleven computing centers to five global twin-core data centers. In the future, employees of ThyssenKrupp will obtain their workstation services, including applications such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint, and Microsoft Lync, directly from the secure Telekom cloud. Employees of the industrial group can therefore flexibly and easily use devices at workstations worldwide and securely exchange data and documents.

Cloud leader Deutsche Telekom

The current Experton "Cloud Vendor Benchmark 2014" study confirms that Deutsche Telekom is on track for success in its cloud business. As in the prior year, Deutsche Telekom has taken the top spot in the categories "cloud market places" and "cloud services for small and medium-sized enterprises". T-Systems is number one in the categories "managed cloud services", "managed private cloud services", and "cloud workplaces", and is one of the top providers in other areas, too.

Experton, a market research institute, performs its cloud study each year, evaluating providers that offer cloud technology, cloud services and transformation services on the German market.
