NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 05/20/15 -- Con Edison customers who cool their homes with central air conditioning can get an $85 rebate for certain energy-saving smart thermostats, under a new offer the utility is making for this summer.
The program is called "Bring Your Own Thermostat" and it's one of many ways Con Edison is helping customers stay cool and save money as the company strives to maintain its industry-leading reliable service.
A customer can use the thermostat to control the central air system remotely with a tablet or smart phone.
"Every Con Edison residential customer in New York City and Westchester County can take advantage of technology to make their home more comfortable and save money this summer," said Patrick McHugh, vice president, Engineering and Planning, at Con Edison. "We urge our customers to sign up as soon as they can and start saving."
Residential customers with central air also have the option of a free smart thermostat, with installation to control their A/C systems remotely. The package has a value of $400. Each customer will also get a $25 thank you gift. Details are at Free Smart Thermostat.
In both of the air conditioning programs, the company can briefly adjust a customer's thermostat when temperatures soar and Con Edison wants to manage electrical demand. Customers can override Con Edison's adjustment.
Con Edison will also pay $20 to residential customers who purchase a new ENERGY STAR room air conditioner. Replacing an older room air conditioner with a new, more energy-efficient unit can reduce electricity usage by about 15 percent. For more information, visit Room AC Rebate.
Customers who cool their homes with room air conditioners can also get information on a thermostat program that enables remote monitoring and control for those units.
