Research and Markets - $152 Billion Hydrogen Generation Market 2016-2021 - Key Players are Linde, Air Liquide, Air Products & Chemicals, Praxair, Airgas & Hydrogenics

DUBLIN, April 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Hydrogen Generation Market by Generation & Delivery Mode, Technology, Application & Region - Global Forecast to 2021" report to their offering.

The global hydrogen generation market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% during the forecast period to reach USD 152.09 Billion by 2021.

This growth is attributed to high demand for hydrogen as a cleaner fuel, government regulations for desulfurization of petroleum products, and decreasing crude oil quality. Hydrogen has potential applications in chemical processing, petroleum recovery and refining, metal production and fabrication, aerospace, and fuel cells.

The report segments the hydrogen generation market on the basis of technology, generation & delivery mode, application, and region. The demand for hydrogen is the largest in petroleum refinery and ammonia production. During petroleum refining, hydrogen is used for desulfurization, and thus, the requirement for hydrogen in refineries depends on the sulfur level present in petroleum products. Governments are regulating sulfur content in final petroleum products, hence; the demand for hydrogen generation is increasing.

On the basis of generation & delivery mode, hydrogen generation has been divided into captive and merchant hydrogen generation. Captive production accounts for those consumers who possess their own production set ups and have an in-house infrastructure. The hydrogen produced is consumed by these manufacturers to produce the final end-user products.

Captive production is expected to dominate the market till 2021. However, merchant production is expected to witness an increase in market share because of the effective technologies used by the sole manufacturers in the market; most common technologies used worldwide include electrolysis (water) and reformation (methane). North America is the largest market for merchant hydrogen production.

Asia-Pacific was the leading market for hydrogen generation in 2015 with increasing end-user applications of hydrogen in manufacturing ammonia, and increasing usage in refining crude oil.

Some of the leading players in the hydrogen generation market include Linde AG (Germany), Air Liquide SA (France), Air Products & Chemicals Inc. (U.S.), Praxair Inc. (U.S.), Airgas Inc. (U.S.), and Hydrogenics Corp. (Canada) among others. Contracts & agreements was the most commonly used strategy by top players in the market, constituting more than one-third of the total developments share. It was followed by expansions, mergers & acquisitions, and new product launches.
