Remote Amazon city gets broadband internet and 4G/LTE mobile services via O3b's high tech satellite-enabled network
O3b Networks announced today that Latin American service provider Axesat has begun providing broadband connectivity to Internet Service Providers (ISPs); and 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE service to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) over the state-of-the-art O3b satellite network. Axesat will also provide services to the corporate and government markets in and around Iquitos.
Iquitos-known as the capital of the Peruvian Amazon-is a port in the northern Amazon and gateway to the region's jungle population centers. With a population of over 400,000, it is the largest Peruvian city in the Amazon province of Loreto, and 6th largest city in Peru.
With this ultra-high throughput, low latency connection live, Axesat will be able to provide much needed high quality bandwidth to help Iquitos businesses improve their competitiveness and enable the local population to enjoy the same quality of communications that people in Lima and other large cities enjoy. Growth in data usage across the Amazon means increasing opportunities for small business growth, tele-medicine, e-learning, tourism, e-government services, and consumer communications.
Previously, Iquitos was connected only with legacy geostationary (GEO) satellites or via a series of microwave towers sending internet signals through the jungles to POPs closer to the coast. With the innovative O3b architecture, however, Axesat is now not only delivering fiber-like connectivity, but will also be able to increase capacity as needed to keep up with rising demand-all without laying a single cable through the Amazon.
"Axesat is thrilled to be offering fiber-like connectivity to northern Peru," said Pablo Hoyos, Business Vice President of Axesat. "O3b allows us to provide a superior user experience to the 400,000 inhabitants of Iquitos, its telecom operators, companies and government agencies. With cutting edge technologies such as O3b, Axesat continues to be a leader in the market, improving communications for our customers."
"We couldn't be happier to be working with Axesat, one of the undisputed service provider leaders in Latin America," said Omar Trujillo, VP Latin America for O3b Networks. "Enabling broadband internet as well as 3G LTE mobile communications to areas like the Amazon, is O3b's primary goal. We look forward to growing with Axesat as our partner to deliver high-performance connectivity across Peru and other parts of South America."
