Smith has been an innovator and leader in the industry for more than 40 years, pioneering new technology and markets. Smith founded FileNet Corporation in 1982, helping to launch the document image-processing industry with one of the first client/server systems, an optical storage and retrieval library and a large-scale software development. Two years later, FileNet launched the workflow software market by introducing WorkFlo(R) to automate paper-based business processes. FileNet continues to introduce new technologies and define new markets.
Prior to founding FileNet, Smith was President and CEO of Basic Four Corporation, an Orange County small business computer manufacturer. Under his management, Basic Four grew from $40 million to $220 million in revenue with more than 20,000 customers worldwide. Before joining Basic Four, he served as executive vice president and director of Sycor, the first manufacturer of intelligent terminals. Smith helped build the company from a start up to $54 million in revenue before he left in 1975.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Smith and his wife, Janice, have demonstrated a strong commitment to the arts and to education through their long-term philanthropic leadership and support.
"It's a terrific honor for me to receive the AeA Lifetime Achievement award," said Ted Smith, founder of FileNet Corporation. "My vision was to bring high value, innovative solutions to customers around the globe and to help each one be a production success. The AeA has played a key role in promoting high tech in Orange County, and the visibility gained helped us realize our goals. FileNet highly values being part of a group that is the 'who's who' of the electronics industry."
In addition, the AeA named FileNet's P8 architecture as the 2004 Innovative Application Software Product/Technology of the Year (See May 17, 2004 press announcement: FileNet P8 Recognized as Innovative Application Software Product of the Year at AeA High-Tech Awards). FileNet P8 combines FileNet's content and process management technology with integration capabilities and applications for business requirements such as records management and team collaboration. FileNet P8's extensible, platform- independent architecture offers ease-of-use, maximum flexibility and lower total cost of ownership.
