Stack Exchange Raises $40 Million Series D Financing from Andreessen Horowitz

- Funding reflects company's continued growth and commitment towards serving world's largest programming community

NEW YORK, Jan. 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Stack Exchange, Inc., best known for Stack Overflow, a site where millions of developers have built and curated the largest online repository of programming knowledge in the world, today announced a $40 million round of Series D funding led by Andreessen Horowitz. Stack Exchange's existing investors also participated in the round, including Bezos Expeditions, Index Ventures, Spark Capital, and Union Square Ventures, bringing Stack Exchange's total venture funding to $70 million. Stack Exchange plans to use this latest round of funding to accelerate the growth of Stack Overflow to serve programmers on a broader scale. This will include investing additional resources into Stack Overflow Careers, a talent site dedicated to helping developers discover, access, and evaluate career opportunities.

"We're devoted to making developers successful," says Joel Spolsky, co-founder and CEO. "Stack Overflow has grown to be so popular that it is trusted by every developer when they hit a problem. While other question websites have come and gone, our obsessive dedication to serving developers has put us in the top 50. If you're a great company looking to hire software engineers, well, we've got 'em right here."

"Stack Overflow has become the indispensable home to the world's programmers," adds Chris Dixon of Andreessen Horowitz. "We're excited to support Stack Exchange as they continue to grow the world's largest resource for developers."

The company will be investing heavily in Stack Overflow Careers in the coming year, which represents the perspective of a developer candidate. The site actively moderates the activity of contingency recruiters, enforces a strict "no spam" policy, and syndicates job opportunities to developers on Stack Overflow question-and-answer pages. Other plans in 2015 include localized versions of Stack Overflow in Japanese, Russian, and Spanish, as well as on-going support and growth of Stack Exchange Q&A communities.

About Stack Exchange

Stack Exchange is the largest network of websites for software developers including Stack Overflow, the pre-eminent destination site for programmers to find, ask, and answer their questions. Founded in 2008 by Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood, the company was built on the premise that serving and enriching the developer community at large would lead to a better, smarter Internet. Since then, the Stack Exchange network has grown into one of the largest websites in the world, with Stack Overflow alone serving more than 26 million professional and novice programmers each month.

The broader Stack Exchange Network has expanded to cover topics as diverse as Mathematics, Home Improvement, Statistics, and English Language and Usage. It's currently ranked in the top 50 U.S. Internet properties (by monthly people), receives roughly 80 million monthly global uniques, and serves more than half a billion monthly pageviews. Stack Overflow Careers, which launched in 2011 is the leading professional resource for programmers to find jobs and explore career opportunities. To learn more, visit http://stackexchange.com.
