FRANKFURT, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Deutsche Lufthansa is planning to cut 5 percent off staff costs per year through 2011 at its central operations, a spokesman said on Sunday, adding he was not able to say how many people worked there.
German business daily Handelsblatt earlier reported in a pre-release of an article to be published on Monday that the company was planning to cut 15 percent of jobs at its central operations by 2012, citing internal management information.
The newspaper said that a company spokesman confirmed the plans.
According to a staff memo obtained by Reuters in July Lufthansa aims to cut annual costs by 1 billion euros ($1.47 billion) by 2011 by cutting around 20 percent of the 2,000 administrative jobs in its passenger airline business.
Along with other airlines, Lufthansa has been hit by lower demand for air travel and rising fuel prices.
