New plan for London's Battersea power station

LONDON, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Plans for a 5.5 billion pound ($8.9 billion) redevelopment of Battersea Power Station, the latest in a long line, were registered on Sunday with Wandsworth Council local authority by developers Treasury Holdings UK.

Since the station ceased generating electricity in 1983, several redevelopment schemes have been proposed -- and later dropped -- for the iconic London landmark on the south bank of the Thames.

Treasury Holdings proposes 3,700 homes, 1.6 million square feet of offices and 500,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space for the 1.75 million sq ft site.

The firm wants the development of the site to be combined with improved public transport infrastructure, including the extension of the Northern Line underground rail service to two new stations -- Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station.
