WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Emerson Electric Co. (EMR) reported that its first-quarter net earnings common stockholders declined to $371 million or $0.50 per share, from $480 million or $0.63 per share in the same quarter last year. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $0.51 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Net sales for the quarter declined to $5.31 billion from $5.54 billion in the prior year quarter. Seventeen analysts had consensus revenue estimate of $5.29 billion for the quarter.
Looking ahead for fiscal 2012, the company now expects earnings per share to be in the range of $3.45 to $3.60. The company expects reported sales growth 2 to 4 percent. Underlying sales and orders are expected to increase 4 to 6 percent. Analysts expect the company to report earnings of $3.51 per share on revenues of $25.28 billion for fiscal 2012.
Earlier, the company expected earnings per share for fiscal 2012 to grow between 8 and 12 percent on reported sales growth of 4 to 6 percent. Underlying sales and orders were projected to increase 5 to 7 percent.
