Entrust Protects the Siemens Enterprise Portal; Offering Secure Access to Over 110,000 Users

MUNICH and DALLAS, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Siemens AG and Entrust, Inc. , a world leader in securing digital identities and information, today announced that Siemens has successfully transitioned their Web single sign on (SSO), in use since 2003, to Entrust GetAccess(TM) 7.1. This measure creates the basis for a wider range of possible uses such as federated identity management.

The Siemens enterprise portal provides employees around the world with access to information and applications, including business-critical applications such as SAP HR. Based upon Siemens' strong access security and flexibility requirements, the company decided in the Spring of 2003 to use Entrust GetAccess(TM) SSO and access control for Web-based applications.

The current version, GetAccess 7.1, is used by over 110,000 Siemens employees in Europe, whereby up to 40,000 different users access the system every day -- and this figure is growing, which means that requirements of system throughput and extensibility are increasing constantly. Now that the change-over has successfully taken place, the company is planning the next step of linking up another 40,000 employees in North America and approximately 10,000 external users (e.g., customers and business partners) to the enterprise portal, and of extending the Web SSO solution into a global SSO solution with Windows login-based authentication.

"We want to create a homogeneous portal environment which we can use to efficiently administer and protect all of Siemens' key applications and services," said Petra Kuther, Director E-Applications at Siemens AG. "Our users can access all applications via one single Web access, provided that they have the appropriate authorization."

"These SSO solutions necessitate strict user authentication, because one single login process provides access to numerous business-critical applications and sensitive information," added Reinhard Schopf, Siemens Chief Information Security Officer. "That's why a key decision criterion for us was that Entrust GetAccess can support the smart card-based Siemens PKI (Public Key Infrastructure)."

"Entrust is delighted that its long-term cooperation with its trusted partner, Siemens, is being extended," said Hans Ydema, Vice-President Continental Europe. "Entrust GetAccess provides Siemens with the ideal platform on which to consistently take advantage of the diverse options for efficient administration that are offered through access controls and authentication, especially since these capabilities are continually gaining in importance for multinational companies."
