SHANGHAI (AFX) - Carrefour SA, the world's second largest retailer, has taken over a supermarket location from Shanghai Cloud Nine Shopping Mall Co Ltd, the Shanghai Daily reported citing an executive with the French company.
The Shanghai retailer runs the city's biggest shopping center in terms of floor space, although it has been troubled by poor business, the paper said.
The retailer invested a total 40 mln yuan to open the supermarket, excluding rental costs. It, however, declined to disclose the rent, the paper said.
'We bought over the assets in the previous store operated by Cloud Nine and are renting the outlet,' Patrick Ganaye, general manager of Carrefour's eastern China operations, told the paper.
The supermarket, to be opened today in Cloud Nine shopping mall near Zhongshan Park, will be the retailer's 10th store in Shanghai and the biggest one within the inner ring road.
Carrefour said it is confident the mall, which is near three metro lines and 24 bus routes, will attract heavy customer traffic, it said.
