LONDON (AFX) - The UK's media regulator this morning said it would look into the subscription TV service British Sky Broadcasting Group wants to launch on the Freeview digital platform.
In a statement, Ofcom said a consultation into the new service will begin shortly to determine whether the proposed change to the current channel line-up is in the interest of viewers.
BSkyB wants to scrap the three free channels it currently broadcasts over Freeview, replacing them with four new 24-hour, pay-only stations.
The regulator also said it would explore the implications of the new compression technology BSkyB plans to use to maximise the Freeview spectrum it owns. simon.duke@thomson.com sd/tc COPYRIGHT Copyright AFX News Limited 2006.
