LONDON (Thomson Financial) - KazakhGold Group Ltd said it has signed a contract with engineering group Maed Ltd for the construction of new tailings re-treatment plants at its Bestobe and Zholymbet gold mines in northern Kazakhstan, each resulting in 2 mln tonnes per year (mtpa) of reclaimed tailings.
The new tailings re-treatment plants at Bestobe and Zholymbet are expected to be commissioned in the third quarter of 2008, and each is designed to recover 90,000 ounces per year of gold, the company said in a statement.
The re-treatment of tailings will boost gold production, and will greatly increase the group's treatment capacity, improve overall gold recovery and this should result in 'significantly' lower operating costs, said executive chairman Kanat Assaubayev in a statement.
