SYDNEY (Thomson Financial) - Australian shares closed higher Thursday with resources leading the way after metal prices soared in New York trading overnight.
The S&P/ASX 200 closed up 37.6 points or 0.6 percent at 6,393.7 and the All Ordinaries closed up 38.9 points or 0.6 percent at 6,400.9.
A massive volume of shares was pushed through the market due to the expiry of September futures contracts at 12 noon (0200 GMT).
At the close, 2.5 billion shares worth 13.5 billion Australian dollars had changed hands.
Gainers outstripped losers 620 to 584, with 369 stocks unchanged.
