PARIS (Thomson Financial) - France could exceed its 2008 official target for GDP growth of 1.7-2.0 percent, according to Finance Minister Christine Lagarde.
Despite a Bank of France estimate today for second quarter growth of just 0.3 percent, France is already on track to meet its full-year target, Reuters quoted Lagarde as saying.
'I hope that with all the measures taken in the area of the economy, we can achieve even better results,' Reuters cited Lagarde as saying at a press conference after meeting with Spanish Economy Minister Pedro Solbes in Madrid.
Asked about the Bank of France estimate, Lagarde said she was sceptical of economic forecasts.
'I am a little bit sceptical, because they also get it wrong,' Lagarde was quoted by Reuters as saying. matt.gil@thomsonreuters.com mrg/vs COPYRIGHT Copyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2008.
