KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (AP) - Boeing Co. announced Monday it reached a key milestone in the Advanced Tactical Laser demonstration program by firing a high-energy chemical laser aboard a C-130H aircraft in ground tests for the first time.
The test last week at Kirtland Air Force Base shows the program is making progress toward what Boeing Missile Defense Systems general manager Scott Fancher says will be ultra-precision capability.
Officials say the Advanced Tactical Laser is designed to destroy, damage or disable targets with little or no collateral damage.
After additional tests, the program will fire the laser in-flight at ground targets.
