WARSAW, April 12 (Reuters) - Poland's acting president, Bronislaw Komorowski, said on Monday there was no reason to rush the nomination of a successor to central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek, who died in a weekend plane crash.
Skrzypek perished along with President Lech Kaczynski and many of Poland's top government and military officials when their plane crashed in thick fog near Smolensk in western Russia on Saturday.
'Because it turned out that governor Skrzypek, had summoned the (Monetary Policy) Council's meeting today, I don't see any particular reason to rush (with appointing his replacement),' Komorowski told a briefing.
As acting president, Komorowski has the power to appoint a new central bank governor.
Earlier, Komorowski said the post at the central bank would need to be filled quickly but he was apparently under the impression that without the governor no one would be able to summon a sitting of the rate-setting Monetary Policy Council.
A former MPC member, Dariusz Filar, suggested a possibility of getting around the problem by not closing the Monday sitting and thus leaving an opportunity for the rate-setting authorities for as long as needed before a new governor head is picked.
Skrzypek's deputy, Piotr Wiesiolek, took over day-to-day management of the central bank, but some MPC members said the law is not clear about whether he can chair monetary policy meetings and have a voice in rate decisions.
