Forecasters have said the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season could be the worst since 2005, when Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma caused havoc in the Gulf Coast, damaging oil rigs and refineries and forcing sharp cuts in production.
The hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30 and often affects the Gulf of Mexico, home to about 30 percent of U.S. oil production, 11 percent of natural gas production, and more than 43 percent of U.S. refinery capacity.
Oil and gas production shut as a precaution peaked on Wednesday at 421,350 barrels per day (bpd) of oil and 919 million cubic feet per day (Mmcfd) of gas. By midday Friday, the amount of oil production offline was down to 205,077 bpd, 12.8 percent of 1.6 million bpd total prior to the storm, and the gas production temporarily out was down to 694 Mmcfd, 10.8 percent of 6.4 Bcf pre-Alex.
ESTIMATED CAPACITY OFFLINE
Oil output: 205,077 (12.8 pct) Friday vs 342,224 bpd (21.4) Thursday.
Gas output: 694 Mmcfd (10.8 pct) Friday vs 877 Mmcfd (13.7) Thursday.
