TOKYO, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Japanese consumer confidence
worsened in August, a Cabinet Office survey showed on Thursday,
in a sign the strength of the yen is starting to affect
sentiment.
The survey's sentiment index for general households, which includes views on incomes and jobs, was 42.4 in August, down from 43.3 in July.
The government downgraded its view on consumer confidence, saying that any improvement was stalling. It previously said that consumer confidence was showing moves towards improvement.
A reading below 50 suggests consumer pessimism.
Following is a comparison with previous months:
AUG JULY JUNE MAY
General households 42.4 43.3 43.5 42.8
The survey began in 1982. 'General households' are those with two or more people.
